Introduction

The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK Government ) has set up the Hong Kong Maritime Scholarship (Scholarship) in PolyU for the academic year 2010/11 to support students enrolled on the MSc in International Shipping and Transport Logistics programme (Full-time Stream)*. The Scholarship aims to expand the manpower of the maritime industry in Hong Kong.

*Candidates are required to submit applications for the programme before applying for the Scholarship.

Number & Value of Award

  • A maximum of 16 scholarships with up to HK$125,000 each.
  • Each scholarship will cover the tuition fee for the programme and, where appropriate, subsidize living costs.

Eligibility

Local Chinese mainland and overseas graduates wishing to enroll on the full-time stream under MScISTL programme offered by the Graduate School of Business (GSB) of PolyU, and having met the following entrance requirements of the programme:

  • An honours Bachelor’s degree in International Shipping or Maritime Studies or other relevant disciplines; and
  • Non-local applicants should possess English language proficiency by having undertaken one of the following English tests and met the specified minimum score:
    • An IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6; or
    • A TOEFL Paper-based test score of at least 550, including a score of at least 4.5 in the Test of Written English; or
    • A TOEFL Computer-based test score of at least 213, including an Essay Writing score of at least 4; or
    • A TOEFL Internet-based test score of at least 79, including a score of at least 20 in the Test of Written English.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic merit;
  • Commitment to undertaking the full-time stream of the programme with 39 academic credits and 6 training credits of Maritime Industry Internship;
  • Commitment to serving in the maritime industry in Hong Kong for at least one year after graduation.

Selection Process

The PolyU and the Scholarship's Steering Committee will select suitable candidates for interview according to the aforementioned selection criteria.

Conditions of Award

  • The recipients are not allowed to concurrently hold any other local merit-based incentives during the studies of the MScISTL programme.
  • The recipients are required to complete the MScISTL programme, covering 39 academic credits and 6 training credits of no-pay Maritime Industry Internship.
  • Within 3 calendar months upon successful completion of the MScISTL programme, the recipients should start working full time in the maritime industry in Hong Kong for a period of not less than twelve consecutive calendar months.

In case the recipient fails to fulfill any one of the above conditions, he/she is required to refund the scholarship received in full to the Scholarship Scheme. Each recipient is required to sign an undertaking to the effect of the conditions above, which shall form a contract between the Scholarship Scheme and the recipient.

Application and Deadline

  • Applicants are required to submit an application for admission to the full-time stream of MScISTL programme via the online admission system (Study@PolyU) before applying for the Scholarship.
  • Completed scholarship application forms should be returned to the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at Room M921, Li Ka Shing Tower, PolyU, Hong Kong on or before 31 March 2010.

Result Announcement

Successful candidates will be notified in writing by GSB of the selection results.
